The Girls
A discussion of the themes raised in the first Sri Lankan film to be directed by a woman.
Thursday 16 July 20:30 BFI Reuben Library

Sumitra Peries’ astute examination of class in Sri Lankan society was awarded Film of the Year at the 1978 London Film Festival. It tells the story of a villager who falls in love with a young man, who comes from a wealthy family. We will look at the themes raised in the film and discuss how pertinent they continue to be.
Our discussion takes places in the BFI Reuben Library, immediately after our screening of The Girls on Thursday 16 July 18:20 NFT3. Members can book film and salon for themselves and their guests in advance for just £8.
Members who watched the film on another date are welcome to come along to the free Salon discussion and show their Membership Card for admission on a first come, first served basis.
See the BFI re-release of The Girls.
Temporary VAT-reduced rate for children: prices have been adjusted for all under 16’s tickets booked between 25 June and 1 September for screenings during the same period.
