A young boy, adrift in the wreckage of post-war Berlin, struggles to survive and provide for his family. He learns to navigate the black market and is subjected to the ill-fated influence of a Nazi ex-teacher. Rossellini’s unstinting account of a society stripped of values reveals the inner wounds left by war and the psychological impact of the ideology that had instigated it.
