Probably still the finest adaptation of Stevenson’s much-filmed novella, this pre-Code classic explicitly links Jekyll’s troubled transformation into the monstrous Hyde to Victorian society’s oppression of his sexual desires. One of the greatest directors of the 30s, Mamoulian used technical innovations, superb lighting and imaginative editing to create a Gothic masterpiece; March and Hopkins, especially, rewarded him with superb performances.
The screening of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde on Wednesday 10 April will be introduced by Geoff Andrew, Programmer-at-Large.
