‘Film should be looked at straight on, it is not the art of scholars but of illiterates.’ – Werner Herzog

The library kicks off 2024 with an exploration of the cinema of Werner Herzog. The German filmmaker’s work encompasses features and documentaries. He has travelled the world, documenting the lives of adventurers and nomads, explorers and pioneers, often to the accompaniment of his own, distinctive narration. Thoughtful, probing questions often result in unexpected answers, allowing audiences to understand what inspires the people who interest him. The BFI Reuben Library has curated a collection of books and articles that celebrate this extraordinary career, his contemporaries and his wide array of influences. The display runs for the whole of January and is free to everyone.
