Merging the queer sensuality of Isherwood’s Goodbye to Berlin with the spectacle of Kander and Ebb’s stage show, Fosse’s account of 1930s Germany is soaked in hedonism, gleeful degeneracy and the encroaching threat of fascism. Liza Minnelli channels her inner Louise Brooks as the free-spirited, wildly talented Sally Bowles, delivering witticisms with a wink as she is dragged down by a changing world – but not before a parting song.
