A married father of two, struggling for employment, finds a job that requires him to own a bicycle. After his is stolen, the man and his young son embark on an increasingly desperate hunt to retrieve it. De Sica’s marvellous, heart-wrenching study of hardship portrays the stolen bicycle as a threat to human dignity.
