Nina Hoss’ exquisitely nuanced performance anchors this gripping character study about an East German doctor in the 1980s who is banished to a small-town for trying to flee the country. Surrounded by constant surveillance and quiet menace, she makes numerous secret bicycle trips to hide funds that will secure her escape. But it’s not long before her vocation as a care provider will collide with her own personal plans.
