Returning from Germany to his now ruined home, a prisoner of war finds himself in a society scarred by loss, destruction and corruption, fails to get honest work and becomes a gangster. A filmmaker all too often overlooked by critics, Lattuada injected noir tension into a neorealist aesthetic. The film was a resounding success at the box office, thanks in no small part to Anna Magnani’s unusual casting as a deceitful femme fatale.
