Frequently regarded as one of the finest American films ever, The Apartment came in a close second for our member poll. A tragicomic tale of isolation in an increasingly modern landscape, Wilder’s risqué rom-com sees Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine finding love amid a sea of corporate ladder climbing and messy sexual politics, with Fred MacMurray making up the third part of the love triangle as their conniving boss. With Wilder’s typical blend of hilarious comedy around darker themes, it remains one of the most delightful films of its era.
