Gilliam’s follow-up to Brazil is an often-overlooked delight. A whimsical take on the picaresque character created by 18th-century writer Rudolf Erich Raspe, it gives the distinguished stage actor John Neville the role of his screen career, playing the lead, who regales the citizens of a town under siege seemingly impossible tales from his adventurous life. There are colourful cameos aplenty, from a rip-roaring Oliver Reed and sultry Uma Thurman to a zany, frequently headless Robin Williams. Gilliam oversees it all with an imagination that is as grand as it is funny, and an ambition and scale that would put most contemporary films to shame.
‘I think this might be an undiscovered and wholesome gem for many BFI members.’
